Key to the treatment approach was the use of advanced imaging technology to assess the ratio of ischemic tissue to infarct volume after acute stroke. Based on the imaging findings, physicians used endovascular thrombectomy on patients with infarct size of <70mL and ischemic tissue:infarct volume ≥1.8. 45% of patient who were treated with endovascular thrombectomy and standard medical therapy were functionally independent compared to only 17% treated with standard medical therapy.

These drones were to see if they can bring an AED to a person suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) faster than EMS response.The average response time of EMS in San Diego is approximately 10 -15 minutes.  When a person is suffering from an SCA, they only have 10 minutes for an AED to be effective.  The study showed out of 18 cardiac arrest calls the AED drone would arrive within 5 minutes from launch versus the EMS arrival on average was ten minutes later according to the Associated PressContinue Study AEDWhen Sweden had its study, they only tested the AED drone in small town communities, and it was sent from launch location to a tester.  According to the Associated Press, these drones have never been tested in an actual cardiac emergency.  The theory is that flying a drone from distinct AED drone stations throughout a city would possibly increase the chance of a patient suffering from SCA to get a shock within the ten-minute window.  There will need to be more studies to test many factors like other drones flying in the air, microwave jamming that can prevent the drone from reaching a target, and people understanding what to do and how to carry the drone into place.  These are little things that can be worked out through time. As you saw through the years only 17 years ago, the AED was just a curiosity, and now they are places almost everywhere.What We can Do NowWhat we can do not is first become competent in knowing CPR and the use of most AEDs.  If you have an AED at your work or place, you reside in, first know where it is and how to use it.  Then become trained in knowing CPR.  The more training you have, the better prepared you will be when an actual emergency happens.  The other thing is to make sure your friends and family know CPR, so you all will be prepared to save each other.  We need to take training and preparing when there is not dangerous because when the emergency happens, it will be too late.

Then a nuclear wind that can through you off your feet and a red and yellow ball of fire going up to the sky.  Then there is a purple haze as the mushroom cloud forms.  When people see this their first instinct is to flee and run.  Where do you run? Some manikins have indication systems inside their bodies like the Preston manikins. Preston manikins come with a light indicator that monitors the speed and depth of your compressions. They go with a three light system of red, yellow and green. Red means the patients dead; Yellow is too mellow, and two green is good.Loop CPR DeviceAnother device ideal for CPR training and that is the Loop CPR program.  Loop is an interactive system with a puck and software for any mobile device.  How it works is by placing the puck on the manikin with a wire attached to your tablet.  There are two programs to choose.  The first one is a meter system.  The meter system measures your ability and depth of compression.  The loop allows you to get direct feedback on how your CPR skill is and how fast it take for you to get tired of performing CPR.The other program from Loop CPR is the game side. The program set to interactive music and an avatar. The objective is to compress the heart with the same rhythm as the music. The people who played the game referred to as playing Guitar Hero, but except it is CPR Hero.CPR feedback devices for Rescuer There are some feedback mechanisms for actually performing CPR.  Zoll pocket CPR is a unit which is a puck-like device that you place on victims chest.  The Zoll pocket CPR unit works well with an AED.  After applying the AED pads, you can put the Zoll Pocket CPR puck on the chest and compress.  It will let you know if you are too deep or not effective.  This unit helps the rescuer keep a consistent compression rate for the victim.Taking a CPR class gives you the knowledge needed when an emergency happens.  Having CPR feedback devices on hand during training and actual medical emergencies will help you know how far you need to compress the heart.  Basic CPR compressions simple as it seems does nothing for the victim if there is no high-quality CPR.  The Beating Heart Center provides training by using such devices to prepare our student in knowing what it takes to save a life.
- [Glucose Insulin and Potassium GIK can potentially reverse a Heart Attack.](https://beatingheartcenter.com/glucose-insulin-and-potassium-gik-can-potentially-a-heart-attack/): How can Glucose, Insulin, and Potassium save your life?  Glucose, Insulin, and Potassium is also known as GIK is a simple solution to saving anyone suffering from Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI).  Heart attacks is an AMI. AMI is the leading cause of death in America.  There are over 500,000 deaths due to heart attacks every year and less than 10% survive. GIK is a new solution under study that is known to help anyone going through a cardiac event.What is Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)?An Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) is equivalent to a heart attack.  What this means are the coronary arteries that feed blood to the heart tissue becomes blocked or has an occlusion.  The flow of blood is limited or completely obstructed to feed the cardiac tissues.  When this happens, part of the heart’s tissues starts to die.  The patient will show signs of the tightness of the chest, pain in the chest which may radiate down the arm of up into jaw. Some patients feel indigestion, fatigue, and persistant back pains.  If you like to learn more about AMI, check out The National Library of Medicine.The ECLA study The Estudio Cardiologico Latinoamerica (ECLA) did a random study on a variety of AMI patients who were treated with GIK solution.  The study group was through one year and had 264 participants.  133 patients with an AMI were treated with GIK solution, and the other 135 patients were given a placebo.  Out of the 133 patients receiving treatment depending on the dose, they received would determine the percentage of an AMI recovery.  Those that received a low dose during an AMI occurance had a 28% decreased mortality rate versus the placebo group.  Those that had a high dose of GIK during an AMI occurance had up to a 48% decrease in mortality rate than the placebo group.  The result of this study is comparable to the previous meta-analysis of GIK solution.The controversy of GIK study.In the past 40 years, there are numerous studies of the use of GIK, and since it is currently used in cardiac surgical treatments, it is not recommended for infusion of AMI. The reason is from an early meta-analysis that found flaws from the length of time to infuse from the onset of AMI till treatment.  Another flaw is the number of participants and randomness of patients which limited accual data of results.  The studies have had trouble keeping a controlled setting since AMI’s are acute and in emergency settings.  The requirement is more studies should be conducted with the use of GIK with larger groups over time.The significants of GIK for todayWhen a person is suffering from an AMI or heart attack, there are currently good and tested treatments to resolve and partially correct the issue.  The current treatment for an AMI is giving a patient one dose of adult asprin or two baby asprin.  Have an AED and if needed to be ready to perform CPR.    GIK is a potential solution in treating patients with AMI and with further study, we believe that glucose insulin and potassium  if given early will correct the restricted blood flow to the heart and heal the damaged tissue.

From our previous blog we had let you know of the Pharmaceutcal company Mylan had increased the price of EpiPens for up to 600%.  Mylan Parmaceutical is only out to make a profit.  They do not care about the well being of the people they save with their medications.History of the EpiPenThe EpiPen first used by the US Military as an auto-injector. To provid medication for our soldiers during a gas attack.  The inventor was a NASA engineer named Shel Kaplan.  In 1980 he developed the EpiPen for people with severe allergies and could go into Anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a body reaction to an allergen, and it is life threatening.  Later the Merck pharmaceutical had purchased rights to sell the medication under the stipulation that EpiPens stay affordable for the consumer.  In 2007 Merck sold the EpiPen to Mylan Pharmaceuticals. Shortly after the purchase of the EpiPen, they increased the price of the EpiPen and made it very hard for people to afford it.Mylan Pharmaceuticals finds a solution to keep prices highIn response to the consumer, outrage of increasing the price of the EpiPen medication. Mylan Pharmaceuticals is proposing to lobby government in having the price of the EpiPen go at no cost to the regular consumer. Instead, have the insurance and employers pay for the high cost.  Mylan would like to have the EpiPen set on a federal list. So the government will not pay for the medication, but have insurance and employers pay, which will pass onto consumers through increased premiums or higher co-pay with other drugs. Mylan Pharmaceuticals have stated that they are researching on the development of a generic version of the EpiPen.  The reality is that Mylan is the poster child as a self interest company and does not care about the lives they save.  Mylan has made over 1.0 Billion dollars on the EpiPen alone since they have increased their prices.What should we do?Mylan Pharmaceuticals is a company that will use government legislature to make policies for their needs.  We as consumers need to let your representatives know that we should not be paying for this medication with our lives.  The trend to make money for the benefit of people who need it and using government to enforce it is killing our public.  Allergic reactions are life threatening issue, and it can kill you in minutes.  I urge you to let your representatives know that we cannot allow Mylan to make the EpiPen too expensive for us all.

In this blog, I like to talk about the different cardiac conditions and who should have AED’s with trained people in Cardio Pulmonary Recusitation CPR.Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)SCA is the leading cause of death in the United States.  The main reason why SCA is so deadly is that there is no warning to when someone will suffer from it.  The cause of SCA is the disruption of heart pacemaker which then stops the heart from beating.  To treat someone suffering from SCA is to start CPR and then get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to shock the heart and restart the pacemaker of the heart.  The Survival rate for SCA is around 10%, and the reason is that CPR and the AED not utilized early enough.Angina Angina is a cardiac condition where blood has trouble getting to the heart muscles. The symptoms of angina are similar to a person having a heart attack.  Symptoms of angina are shortness of breath, chest pains, indigestion, radiating pains down arm and face. Some people claim pressure in the chest.  The treatment is asprin, nitroglycerin, and oxygen during emergencies.  During some angina, flare ups can lead to a collapse, and CPR may be needed.CardiomyopathyCardiomyopaty is a heart condition where the heart muscle is abnormal.  There are three main types of cardiomyopathy, which is dialation, hypertrophic, and restrictive.  All three conditions restrict the blood flow through the body.  This heart condition can lead to heart failure.  The symptoms can lead to shortness of breath, heart palpatations, fatigue, and swollen lymbs.  Anyone suffering from this condition needs to have support and people around them who know CPR and trained in the use of an AED.If you or anyone you know is suffering from any of these cardiac conditions, it’s highly recommended that you have people trained in CPR and how to operate an AED.  AED’s can increase the chance of survival up to 70%.  The Beating Heart Center can provide you with CPR training and get an AED placed in your home.  Our programs are very efficient and work well with you and your family schedule.

SCA is when the heart has an electrical malfunction where the heart is no longer able to pump blood throughout the body. When this happens, the hearts normal pace maker fires radically and makes the heart quiver like if the heart paralyzed.  The patient will suddenly collapse with little to no warning.  Immediately if you see this, you need to call 911 and then start CPR, within 10 minutes from the onset of collapse you need to use an Automated External Defibrillator AED on the victim.

We all enjoy walking on the beach, surfing the waves, or just enjoy the sun.  The coast is full of life and sea creatures that can cause harm to unsuspected beach goer.Sea creatures such as fire coral, sea anemones, and jellyfish can cause stings to people just playing around on the coast.  When someone is stung by tentacles of a jellyfish, it creates painful marks on the skin, and the venom will deactivate.  One of the best ways to initiate the deactivation of the tentacle venom is household vinegar.  What you have to do is wash the site with household vinegar for about 30 seconds.  Later after leaving the beach the patient needs to take a shower with hot water to help stop any spread of rash.Another harsh sea creatures are the stingray. Stingrays like to inject barbs into the skin with venom.  The barbs will give great pain in the affected appendage.  To help reduce pain and deactivate the venom, you should clean the wound and place the appendage in hot water for about 30-90 minutes. It should be hot enough for the person to tolerate.  Emerging the affected area in hot water will deactivate the venom.Allergic ReactionsExposure to venoms from sea creatures in the ocean, the victim, may have an allergic reaction.  The allergic reaction from jellyfish, fire coral, and sea anemones can be deadly.  Sooner the person starts showing symptoms of an allergic reaction, the more allergic the person is to the venom.  When a person is experiencing an allergic reaction, they will need to treat immediately.  The quickest way to help someone with an allergic reaction is that if they carry an epi-pen auto-injector.  The auto-injector can easily administer by injecting the upper thigh.If you want to be safe this Labor day, you need to be vigilant.  The knowledge to know what to do when you encounter these stinging sea creatures can save lives.  Taking a basic first aid class will help give you the knowledge and skills needed to save the lives of people who are injured.

The Epi-pen is a set dose of epinephrine (adrenaline) in a syringe auto-injector.  The way to administer an epi-pen is by having a patient experiencing an allergic reaction to self-inject the medication into their upper thigh.  Epinephrine will constrict all blood vessels in the body and reduce swelling.Epi-pens are the only medication out there to reduce severe allergic reactions.  The Mylan Pharmaceuticals is only looking for self-interest than the needs of its customers. According to NBC News the CEO Heather Bresch has increased her salary by 500%, which is exactly how much the Epi-pen has gone up this year.  Heather Bresch stated that “through insurance companies and commercial coupons people could gain access to epinephrine auto-injectors for free.”What is an Allergic Reaction?An allergic reaction is an auto immune response to chemicals that make histamines react in the body.  The response is triggered by food, medicines, stings and bites from insects and animals.  Faster the body reacts to the substance the greater the danger.  When an allergic reaction happens, the person will experience hives, swelling of the face eyes and hands, and swelling of the airway.  Unfortunately, when the airway seals shut the victim may die.  That is why we need the epi-pen for the treatment of a severe allergic reaction.The Beating Heart Center does not condone the fact that Mylan Pharmaceuticals makes the Epi-pen too expensive for any basic consumer.  We request that pharmaceutical companies take on producing their version of the epi-pen auto-injector.  If other companies lower their prices, then this can push Mylan out of business through competition.Some people may not know what to do in a medical emergency such as an allergic reation.  The BHC can help you get prepared to respond to any medical emergencies.

The average person knows about having gloves on when someone is bleeding. The problem is that most people do not think of having these simple devices near them in the case of an emergency.It is hard to keep in mind dangers that we cannot see and in our day to day lives we tend to forget these unsightly dangers. Bloodborne pathogens are all over the place and in areas we least expect.  According to the Health and Safety Institute, some BBP can live in dried blood for up to 7 or more days.  The use of PPE is so common now that everyone regardless of job needs to be trained in the prevention of spreading pathogens.PPE in the WorkPlace In the workplace, there are requirements for every company to have PPE ready for all employees when exposed to BBP.  OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030 states that gloves and washing stations have to be available for exposure of any bloodborne pathogen.What is wrong with this regulation? That all companies have to have available supplies for PPE, but it does not indicate training for staff.  The OSHA regulation only mandates through the needs of the work or profession.  If we make BBP training mandatory in all fields of work, there will be a greater aware of the danger and prevention of the spread of these diseases.PPE for your Personal LifeWhen you are out with friends, do you have gloves on or near your person? If the answer is no, you are not alone. Most people do not think of being prepared for possible emergencies.  We all tend to buy a First Aid kit at our local drug store, but having access to gloves can greatly reduce your exposure to BBP.  When you train in the use of PPE, you will prevent the spread of Hep B, Hep C, and HIV.  These diseases are a fraction of many other bloodborne pathogens out there.How do we get Trained? You may be asking how you can properly train in the use of PPE and BBP. If your company requires you to know CPR/AED and First Aid, you should have BBP training within those classes.  Some training groups do not put much effort on BBP.  Being prepared for any medical emergency is very valuable in the workplace as well as in personal life. - [Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Makes Saving Lives Simple](https://beatingheartcenter.com/automated-external-defibrillation-aed-makes-saving-lives-simple/): Legislation Follows New Technology to Improve Public Access to AEDs“Apply Pads to bare chest,” the AED machine commanded during CPR training.  “Analyzing heart rhythm,” the AED added.  “Do not touch the patient.”The training dummy didn’t have much of a heart rate, of course.  I guess that’s why the next voice command heard from the AED machine in the CPR and AED training video was “shock advised.  Stand clear of patient.”These new AED machines have taken the guess work out of saving lives.    Even the shock pads are pre-connected.  All you have to do to deliver a shock is press the orange button.  Just wait for the AED to let you know when!The new machines are so easy and safe to use that it is becoming easier for legislation to follow; protecting those who use the AEDs.    California Senate Bill 658, for example, was passed unanimously in late 2015.  The Governor signed the bill and the legislation became effective January 1st, 2016.The bill “increases public and private access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in California,” according to the California State Firefighters Association.   The bill “streamlines state requirements that commercial building owners and public facilities need to follow to be immune from liability if they have AEDs on their property.”Although requirements for maintenance, posting instructions and annual demonstrations for building tenants still exist, those who provide AEDs in their facilities, such as shopping malls and restaurants, have fewer hoops to jump through to protect themselves from liability.“We were told to never touch the customer,” my waiter said when I asked him about AEDs in my favorite San Diego restaurant.  “Even if someone is having a heart attack.  We don’t know what to do!”What my waiter and his manager don’t know is that AEDs have voice controls that will help the good Samaritan respond appropriately.   The waiter is protected by good Samaritan laws in California that shield him from legal liability if something goes wrong during AED use, which never happens anyway.  According to the US Department of Health and Human Services,  “there are no reports of AEDs harming bystanders or users. - [New Dechoker Device Focuses Spotlight on Choking Hazards](https://beatingheartcenter.com/new-dechoker-device-focuses-spotlight-on-choking-hazards/): Maybe you’ve just seen the Dechoker television ads.  Or you stumbled across one of the Dechoker training videos on YouTube.A rescuer realizes that someone is unable to breathe and responds with a syringe-shaped device that includes a long tube and face mask.  The rescuer places the face mask on the victim, inserts the tube into the victim’s throat, pulls the plunger up which “sucks” a blockage from the windpipe, and restores the victim’s airway.Here is a video of the Dechoker in action, removing sausage from a passageway.It seems to be a sound judgment call that any device using vacuum pressure and the face mask seal should be able to help choking victims by giving enough safe suction to remove an object stuck in an airway.Does the Dechoker work?Unfortunately, there is scant evidence, yet, that the device works to save lives.  It may be a great new alternative to a typical first-aid response, but the jury is still out.  The FDA “approval” mentioned on the Dechoker.com website is a misnomer at best and misleading at worst:  the device is simply registered and listed with the FDA, not approved.Now, many medical devices aren’t considered “high-risk,” so the approval process isn’t necessary.  The Dechoker Press release regarding FDA registration labels the device as Class II, which doesn’t require FDA approval.  But it is wise to be at least a bit skeptical about devices that use the FDA “seal of approval” when it has never been awarded.First Aid for Choking Adults and ChildrenMethods and techniques for choking first-aid, including back slaps and abdominal thrusts (i.e., the Heimlich Maneuver)  are important topics in emergency response because of the frequency of deaths related to choking.  The National Safety Council, in its Injury Facts 2015 publication reports that “choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death.  Of the 4,800 people who died from choking in 2013, 2,700 were older than 75.”Understanding and being able to administer choking First Aid is a big deal for parents and children, too.More than 1200 children died in 2013 from suffocation, most under the age of one year.  And for every choking-related death, there are 100 ER visits each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.Food, such as hot dogs, is one of the biggest culprits.  Every five days, a child in the US chokes to death while eating. The good news about the Dechoker is that the device is available in sizes that may be able to help you rescue a child or an infant.    The more frequent choking First Aid techniques used for adults often have to be modified for the smaller bodies.  This father in Chicago saved his son’s life using abdominal thrusts (sometimes called chest thrusts or the Heimlich Maneuver).“I recommend that my students learn how to respond to a choking emergency by first using Chest or Abdominal Thrusts,” said Jeffery Guernsesy, owner of San Diego’s Beating Heart Center.   Abdominal thrusts are one of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Health Safety Institute’s (AHSI) recommended first steps to take when rescuing a choking victim.First Aid Training Still ImportantPerhaps using the Dechoker device will be added to the recommended response action steps in future if reports in field use reflect claims made by the device manufacturer.    Regardless of the Dechoker’s success or failure rate, First Aid and CPR training are still critical.The father who saved his son using the Heimlich Maneuver recommends that parents take certified First Aid training classes, download one of the free first-aid apps for smartphones and remember to call 911.First Aid and CPR training classes are available almost every day of the week for very low cost using gamified learning systems to enhance lesson retention.  You can even access the materials in an online and in-person hybrid format that cuts down on time spent traveling to classes.If you live in or around the San Diego, California area, be sure and check out the schedules for American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute Certified First Aid and CPR Classes at the Beating Heart Center.

($12 per resuscitation mask, $5 per face shield)Research reported in the New England Journal of Medicine last year revealed that 30-day cardiac event survival rate after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is more than twice as high when CPR and AED support is administered immediately by non-medical personnel before EMS personnel arrival.Now at least twenty other states are now requiring that CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator equipment are available in high schools and fourteen states require similar equipment and training in health clubs.  Additional state legislators are beginning to discuss adoption of the New York State stance on CPR training in bars and restaurants.Rep. Spencer Cox of Utah proposed such a mandate in 2013. He suggested that the state of Utah require bartenders to be trained in CPR delivery. " to mandate that all bar tenders be CPR trained.As reported in KSL.com's news section "Cox said he raised the issue at the request of a constituent whose brother-in-law died after being punched outside the Le Sabre bar in American Fork in January 2012."    The patron was attacked in the parking lot outside the bar, his head hit the concrete pavement, and he died a week later.Cox purports that as a result of exposure to alcohol use, bar patrons are more likely to be at risk of violence and CPR/AED training is important for protecting patrons' safety.Business owners who resist this type of regulation are usually concerned about additional regulations on their business that increase costs.  But of greatest concern is the risk of lawsuits that might be brought by patrons or family members if something goes wrong with the CPR or AED administration.California Health and Safety Code 1797.196/AB2083 (2006) - In order to ensure public safety, any person or entity that acquires an AED is not liable for any civil damages from any acts or omissions in the rendering of the emergency care under subdivision (b) of Section 1714.21 of the Civil codeThat fear, at least in California, may be unfounded.  California has passed laws to protect business owners and other volunteers who use AEDs to support cardiac arrest victims.Most states have Good Samaritan laws that protect volunteers who offer medical assistance, such as by-stander CPR.  Here is an excellent resource to begin your Good Samaritan Law research.    Note that as protective as the laws may be, CPR training and certification is an added layer of protection, at least in the California statutes.Find out more about American Heart Association certified CPR training classes in San Diego at the Beating Heart Center.  Classes are low-cost and easy to access via online (with in person assessment) as well as completely in person.Do you think Bartenders should be trained in CPR and AED use?  Please add your comments here!
- [Free & Low Cost Help to Avoid the Deadliest Bugs in Your Work Place - Bloodborne Pathogens](https://beatingheartcenter.com/free-low-cost-help-to-avoid-the-deadliest-bugs-in-your-work-place-bloodborne-pathogens/): If you and your employees are exposed to blood or blood products or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) s at your workplace including bodily fluids such as saliva, then you are all at risk for contracting several dangerous and  life-threatening illnesses.    (See the full list of OPIMs here.)Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the vius that causes AIDS) are the worst pathogens that can be transmitted from one person to the next through exposure to the infected person’s blood or bodily fluids.    We are all familiar with the suffering and death caused by the AIDS virus and Hepatitis B and C are bad players as well.   According to the World Health Organization,  Hepatitis “Types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer.” (1)People that work in many different fields such as healthcare, first aid responders, housekeeping, Nurses, tattoo artists and body pierces, may be at risk to bloodborne pathogens through needle sticks and other sharp objects that can lead to contaminationThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) experts develop and publish written requirements for employers that are designed to protect you and your employees from these diseases.   (29 CFR 1910.1030).If this full list of standards as outlined on the US Department of Labor website seems a bit overwhelming at first, you can begin your program research with this two-page OSHA Fact Sheet on bloodborne pathogen programs.   It gives you a high level overview of the standards and how you can institute them for your workplace program.  Taking all the safety precautions necessary doesn’t’ have to be an overwhelming task.  There are many additional support services available for free or for very low cost.Starting with your local OSHA office is usually another initial best first step to take.  You can find OSHA offices by state on the web or call 1-800-321-OSHA (6742).   Even small business owners can call and ask for a free onsite OSHA consultation to determine whether or not they are required to have a plan in place.Another excellent resource to locate in your community is the certified bloodborne pathogen training centers.   For example, The Beating Heart Center provides Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) certification course in the San Diego area for just $40 per person per class.The course is delivered almost completely on line and satisfies the requirements of the US Department of Labor, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.     It is designed for any individual, employee or employee group that has a reasonable anticipation of contact with blood or OPIM in their jobs.Spending a few hours instituting Bloodborne pathogen plans and training for you and your staff can save a life-time of suffering and prevent early death.  You can start today by taking advantage of the free and low-cost support services available to help you prevent further spread of these deadly diseases in your workplace and community.
- [The Two Most Important Thing to Save Your Life from Sudden Cardiac Arrest](https://beatingheartcenter.com/the-two-most-important-thing-to-save-your-life-from-sca/): The risk of early death from cancer drives us to buy sunscreen with high SPFs and sign up for yearly mammograms; the fear of developing diabetes or heart disease has us buying brightly colored veggies for lunch and pounding out the miles on the gym’s treadmill.Good things to do?  Yes.  But not the most important things to do to protect your health.“Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death among adults over the age of 40 in the United States and other countries.  In the US alone, approximately 326,200 people of all ages experience EMS assessed out-of-hospital non-traumatic SCA each year and nine out of 10 victims die,”  according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation a national community benefit 501(c)(3) organization based in Pittsburgh, PennsylvaniaTo put this number in context, the Sudden Cardiac Foundation points out on their website that more people die each year from SCA than from “Alzheimer’s disease, assault with firearms, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, diabetes, HIV, house fires, motor vehicle accidents, prostate cancer and suicides combined.”And most out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the home.SCA Can Happen to Anyone, Anywhere, AnytimeUnfortunately, almost 90% of SCA victims die before reaching a hospital.  But studies have found that many more victims can be saved if bystanders act quickly and begin CPR plus a shock with an automated external defibrillator (AED) – the most effective immediate treatment for cardiac arrest. (2)There are four time sensitive links that must occur rapidly for the victim to have a chance of survival, according to the American Heart Association.  Research has shown that the first three links are directly related to patient survival.

- [Save a Life in Real Life:  Learn to Use an AED](https://beatingheartcenter.com/save-life-real-life-learn-use-aed/): How many times have you seen this emergency scene on television?  Someone in the hospital calls a “code red!”   A nurse or a doctor runs into the patient’s room, rubbing red chest paddles together and yelling “clear!”Then the rescuers applying the paddles to a person’s chest which shocks the person back to life.   If that’s how you imagine an automated external defibrillator works -- well, you may have been watching too many medical dramas.  Don’t buy into the medical myths.  Turn off the tube and find yourself a certified CPR/AED training class instead.    There isn’t any paddle rubbing going on when someone is using an AED.  And AEDs won’t bring someone back to life if they have a “flat line” heart beat.But AEDs do shock an irregular heart rate back to normal.  And the technology itself is quite the lifesaver if used correctly.    According to the American Red Cross, 350,000 people of all ages will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) each year.       An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest that is also an easy to operate tool for someone with no medical background.It’s important to keep this in mind as victims of sudden cardiac arrest can be any age – especially young people who you would never suspect might succumb to an attack.For example, sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death for young athletes and research shows AED provides survival benefits in public and athletic settings.   AEDs can even be used to intervene on sudden cardiac arrest occurring in victims of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, such as the 13-year-old You Tube Star Caleb Logan who passed away last year.The American Red Cross is so convinced that AEDs are effective and easy to use by the general public, that the organization recommends everyone in the country be within a 4 minute reach of an AED.So the next time you are in a public place like an airport or a school, take a quick look around.  You should see one of these orange, red or blue boxed defibrillators nearby.
- [February is Heart Month: Lets Take Yours To The Gym](https://beatingheartcenter.com/february-heart-month-lets-take-gym/): February is filled with Heart Month celebration activities -- from Valentine’s Day dinners and chocolate candy deliveries to Go Red for Women American Heart Association events.   But did you know that one of the most important and safest activities for your heart during February happens at the gym?We all know that aerobic exercise is good for your heart.  Although there is a slightly higher risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) at the time of exercise for both physically active and more sedentary individuals1 , overall your heart gets healthier from aerobic exertion.   And if you are getting your aerobic exercise dose at a “traditional exercise facility”, i.e. a gym,  that slightly higher risk of SCA is mitigated by this:   your chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest are about 10% higher if you experience the SCA at a gym as compared to other exercise locations, such as a bowling alley.Why are gyms safer?  The research, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, points to the high number of automated external defibrillators (AEDS) located in gyms.   Although compulsory AED placement varies by state, generally more AEDs are located in gyms because of that slightly higher risk of sudden cardiac arrest that can occur during strenuous exercise.    Most gyms are on alert and more prepared than other exercise locations to handle that rare occurrence of a sudden heart attack.And it doesn’t hurt that gyms have personal trainers and staff members who are certified in CPR/AED and First Aid.The American Council on Exercise (ACE), a non-profit organization that claims to have trained more than 58,000 Certified Fitness Professionals, requires their students pass a CPR/AED training course in order to complete their personal trainer certification.The CPR/AED training for ACE students must come from a recognized CPR training provider that requires hands on skills assessment as well as course work.  (The Beating Heart Center training classes, approved by the American Health and Safety Institute and the American Heart Association, provide CPR and AED training that meets those criteria.)The personal trainers at your gym will have received infant, child and adult CPR training as well as instructions on how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).    (If you are pursuing your personal training certification and need CPR/AED classes near you in the San Diego area, click here for a schedule).Yes, the gym is busier in February than almost any other time of year.  Many of us are working on keeping our heart healthy resolutions such as that thirty minute per day aerobic heart work out.Yes, the gym is busier in February than almost any other time of year.  Many of us are working on keeping our heart healthy resolutions such as that thirty minute per day aerobic heart work out.So you may have a slight wait for a treadmill or other aerobic exercise machine because of the high traffic at your local establishment.  Don’t give up!  Getting your time on the machine is so beneficial to your heart’s well-being.    Not only is it safer than working out at some other locales, you will be burning off some of those Valentine’s Day chocolates, too.Sources:

But if you are following US Department of Homeland Security Active Shooter protocols which include hiding out from the shooter, you may be sheltering in the vicinity of a gunshot wound victim who is hemorrhaging. Emergency medical responders may be delayed for an hour or more. And you know that stopping the bleeding is one of the first steps necessary for saving a life.In that case, many experts are beginning to believe that “in mass shootings and terror attacks, perhaps civilians could be their own first responders.”    (“Fighting Terrorism with Tourniquets” , The Atlantic, 11/20/2015).“In Mass Shootings and Terror Attacks, perhaps civilians could be their own first responders..” The number of mass shootings* in the US is growing:  in 2015, the United States suffered three hundred and thirty incidents according to the Mass Shooting data list published by the not-for-profit group Gun Violence Archive.  Your first-aid training for gunshot wounds could be more important someday than you ever imagined.Here are highlights from the updated 2015 American Heart Association and Red Cross first-aid guidelines for treating open chest wounds and bleeding control.  These should be included in your CPR and First Aid certification preparation classes.Open Chest Wound Updates:New recommendations from the American Heart Association website warn first-aid responders to avoid using an air or water tight bandage to stop the bleeding.    “We recommend against the application of an occlusive dressing or device by first aid providers for individuals with an open chest wound.”The warning extends to using non-occlusive gauze bandages.  Blood-soaked bandages can become a partial or full barrier to air flow depending on saturation and should be monitored closely.Bleeding Control Updates Applying direct pressure without or without gauze is still a best practice for restricting bleeding and tourniquets are recommended in many situations.
